Futoshi Tsuneyama has served as a Senior Advisor/Principal Associate since July 2024, following his tenure as General Manager of the E&P Department at Idemitsu Kosan, where he was responsible for the company’s upstream oil and gas business, geothermal energy, and energy transition initiatives, including CCS/CCUS. He returned to the company’s headquarters in 2022 after spending two years in Norway as Managing Director of Idemitsu Petroleum Norge.
Tsuneyama began his career as an exploration geologist at Idemitsu Kosan in 1989. He subsequently broadened his expertise in geophysics through training, research, and the practical application of geophysical technologies to exploration and development projects. His work focused primarily on characterizing hydrocarbon distribution through quantitative seismic analysis based on rock physics principles. During his more than 30 years in the industry, he worked at the Technology Research Center of the Japan National Oil Corporation from 1999 to 2002. He also served as Deputy General Manager of the Gas Business Development Department at Idemitsu Kosan from 2013 to 2015.
Tsuneyama holds a Master of Science degree from Niigata University and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from Stanford University.
